Walk into any kirana store and every turmeric pack looks the same: yellow powder, a smiling family, the word "pure" somewhere on the front. So why does turmeric from one small belt in Meghalaya sell for more than double the everyday stuff, and why do chefs and Ayurveda practitioners specifically ask for it by name?
The Lakadong Belt
Lakadong turmeric grows in a cluster of villages in the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, at elevation, in soil and climate conditions that haven't been replicated anywhere else in India. Farmers there have grown the same landrace for generations. The result is a rhizome with a strikingly deep orange core, visibly darker than the pale yellow of commodity turmeric, and that colour is not cosmetic.
The Curcumin Difference
Curcumin is the compound responsible for most of turmeric's celebrated properties, from its anti-inflammatory reputation to its colour and depth of flavour. Ordinary commercial turmeric typically tests between 2% and 3% curcumin. Lakadong turmeric is prized for testing several times higher, among the strongest recorded anywhere in the world.

What You Notice in the Kitchen
Three things. The colour: a pinch goes further, and dal takes on a deeper golden hue than you are used to. The aroma: earthier and less musty than mass-market haldi. The strength: most home cooks find they use noticeably less per dish.
Why Most Brands Don't Sell It
Supply is small, the belt is remote, and blending it with cheaper turmeric would erase exactly what makes it special. It only makes sense for brands willing to sell a single origin honestly, at its honest price. That is the entire premise Farmdoor was built on.
